RAPHAEL (FRAGIL/FR/LONDRES ST GILLES)

Podcast enregistré pour Vibes and Peppers records:

JASON (KRISTINA RECORDS/UK/LONDRES)

I started getting properly into techno and house when I was 19 or 20 so we’re talking 1997 kinda time. I really got an education from an older housemate of mine as he had some amazing records from the early 90s things like Carl Craig and early Detroit Techno plus loads of UK Hardcore and Techno, and things like Black Dog which blew my mind at the time. We had loads of little parties at this house and would play these records and stuff we were buying from shops like Soul & Dance Exchange in Notting Hill, Koobla, Vinyl Addiction and vinyl junkies, places like that. I’m from London, always lived here, and was going to clubs like The End, Fabric and lots of little underground parties in east London too. I was also doing a party of my own with some friends called The Surgery. we did this for a few years at the clinic in Chinatown which was a small club on top of a Chinese restaurant. Later on we did parties in Shoreditch and Hackney too, this was around 2001/2002 i guess, i cant really remember very clearly the time. Also a little club that opened in Kings Cross called Key – this was a great club – 350 people and nice sound. I was resident there for a night called Symmetry – that was a cool place to DJ. By this time I was also working in Soul & Dance Exchange (where I used to shop!) – an amazing second hand shop and a London institution. This at the time was amazing for me and opened up my ears to so much good music – as well as House music I discovered old Disco, got into African and Jazz and Latin, Krautrock and early Experimental stuff – working with different people all the time you just got to hear some much different stuff, discovering new things everyday. I worked there for 8 years and came away with a pretty good record collection.

In 2011 I opened my own shop with two friends in Hackney called Kristina Records. The idea for the shop was to combine secondhand records and also the best in underground and cutting edge House and Techno. This is where my passion is for music – I like to combine new and old records when I play and I listen to all sorts of stuff. I’m also into to vinyl – I don’t play from any other format. I’ve laways played vinyl that’s just the way it is. I don’t necessarily have anything against CD’s and MP3s being incorporated into the set up, although it’s not for me, but it’s sad when i see a DJ with no records at all.
