Ta résidence d’été « Wisdom of the Glove » à Ibiza, a investi Brooklyn (New York) il y a quelques semaines. Comment c’était ?
La soirée était incroyable et magique, c’était la première fois que j’avais l’impression que tout avait été préparé comme ça devait l’être, et c’était super de faire cette soirée ensemble avec Verboten. C’était aussi cool qu’il y avait un sentiment de rave party, mais avec tout de même une clientèle et une ambiance classes. Les visuels et la musique de tous les DJs étaient tellement au top toute la nuit, que je n’aurais pas pu espérer un meilleur démarrage pour la Wisdom of the Glove New York.

Vu d’Europe, même si Detroit et Chicago sont les endroits où les musiques électroniques (dans leur format actuel) sont nées, il semble que la scène US est un petit peu moins développée sur le plan underground qu’en Europe. Comment se passe ta tournée Nord-Américaine ? Comment est le public et la scène là-bas ?
Je dirais que maintenant les meilleures soirées au monde se passent en fait à Brooklyn (New York), Miami et Chicago. C’est peut-être moins développé mais c’est carrément plus enthousiaste et effervescent ici, et en fait j’adore passer 6 mois par an aux States parce que j’adore jouer pour ce public.

Pendant que tu es aux Etats-Unis, vas-tu rendre visite à ton fan P.Diddy ? Cela fait presque 3 ans que tu as remixé son titre « Nothing Can Be True », et environ 2 ans que l’on peut écouter ton morceau en featuring avec P. Diddy « Lifted » dans les sets des gros festivals d’été, tout comme le gros hit 11:11 « Tourist Trap ». Où en est votre collaboration ? J’ai lu une interview où tu décrivais des débuts chaotiques, mais avec une fin heureuse.
La dernière fois que j’ai vu P.Diddy c’était au Burning Man, on a passé quelques heures ensemble et on a eu une conversation très intéressante. On a décidé qu’on allait probablement remettre le projet en route, très certainement en 2014. Je vais essayer de nous créer un morceau de plus, pour que je puisse moi-même m’y sentir davantage connecté, parce que ça fait déjà un sacré bail.

Toujours à propos de tes productions, on a pu écouter tout un tas de tracks unreleased dans ton dernier Essential Mix sur la BBC. Le morceau très deep et très fluide composé avec Dixon, « No Distance », a retenu notre attention. Peux-tu nous en dire sur la manière dont a démarré votre collaboration ?
Je travaillais à New York l’année passée sur ce morceau qui a été inspiré par une mésaventure qui est arrivée à un ami à moi, et qui m’a beaucoup ému. Ensuite je l’ai envoyé à Dixon pour le remixer, et il en a fait quelque chose de très similaire à l’original mais d’un peu plus incisif. C’est alors que j’ai eu l’idée, au lieu d’avoir un track et un remix, pourquoi ne pas travailler ensemble dessus, et cela a relancé sans cesse de nouvelles idées que nous avions et c’est ce track qui en a découlé.

Et qu’en est-il des autres travaux non publiés ? En réalité, tu sembles te diriger vers des releases uniquement au format numérique, comme pour ton dernier album gratuit. Alors que va-t-il advenir à la fois à Supplement Fact (ton label principal) et Supplemental, la subdivision numérique ?
Je suis en train d’ouvrir un nouveau label appelé Rumors, où ce track composé avec Dixon sera sorti, et avec un peu de chance toutes ces autres compositions non releasées aussi. Vous devriez l’attendre au tournant, parce que ce label va être clairement meilleur que Supplement Facts! C’est une toute nouvelle orientation musicale et un nouveau départ. Supplement Facts a vécu sa vie pendant plusieurs années, et à ce stade je veux concentrer mes efforts et mon attention sur celui-ci et en faire un label dans le coup.

Dernière question mais pas des moindres, parce que comme tu le sais les français sont un peu chauvins : on est au courant que tu viens au Yoyo Club à Paris, France, vers la fin du mois de décembre. À ce sujet, quelle était ta dernière date en France ? Es-tu enthousiaste à l’idée de cette prochaine date ?
J’avais l’habitude de vivre à Paris il y a 2 ans, et c’est l’une de mes villes préférées dans le monde. Je suis un grand fan de Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Luc-Godard, et Brigitte Bardot, et chaque fois que je vais à Paris j’y trouve des tas d’amis et c’est tout simplement énorme. Ma dernière date était au Rex Club vers septembre et aussi au Marvellous Island Festival cet été – je suis trop content de revenir, c’est insoutenable je ne peux plus attendre !

Your « Wisdom of the Glove » residency took place a few weeks ago in Brooklyn, NYC. How did it go down?
The party was amazing and magical, it was the first time I felt like everything was well taken care of, and it was great to do this event together with Verboten. It was great to see it come together with a warehouse feeling, but still having a classy crowd and vibe. The visuals and the music from all the DJs was just so on point all night long, I couldn’t have asked for a better Wisdom of the Glove New York debut.

Although electronic music, in its most modern form, was born in Detroit and Chicago, the American underground scene seems a bit less developed, from a European’s perspective anyway. How is your current tour in North America going? How are the audience and the scene there?
I would say that right now some of the best parties in the world are actually in Brooklyn, Miami and Chicago. It may be less developed but its just much more enthusiastic and fresh, and I actually enjoy spending half of my years in the States because I love playing for the crowd.

While you’re touring in the USA, do you plan on visiting your fan P.Diddy? It’s been nearly 3 years since you remixed his song « Nothing Can Be True », and a couple of years since you played « Lifted » featuring P. Diddy at big summer festivals, as well as the massive hit 11:11 « Tourist Trap ». How is collaborating with P Diddy going? I read an interview where you described a pretty hectic start, but thankfully it worked out in the end.
Last time I saw Diddy was at Burning Man, we spent a few hours together and had a really interesting conversation. We decided we’re probably going to bring the project back, most likely in 2014. I’m going to try and create one more track so I myself can feel a little bit more connected to it, as it really has been a long long time.

We could listen to many of your unreleased tracks on your last Essential Mix on the BBC. The very smooth and deep track, « No Distance » featuring Dixon, caught our attention. Could you tell us more about how the idea of this collaboration came about?
I was working in New York last year, about this track that was influenced by a misfortune that happened to a friend of mine and I got really emotional about it. Then I sent it to Dixon to make a remix, and he did something very similar to the original but it was a little bit more focused. Then I thought instead of having one track and then a remix, why don’t we work together on it and we pitched some ideas back and forth and this is what came out of it.

And what about the other unreleased works? I actually noticed you tend to release music only in digital format, as you did with your last free album. What’s going to happen to both Supplement Facts and your digital sub-label Supplemental?
I’m opening a new label called Rumors, where this track with Dixon will be released and hopefully some of this unreleased material will be there as well. You should be waiting for it, because this label is going to be much better than Supplement Facts! It’s just a new musical direction and a fresh start. Supplement Facts has been going on for some years, and right now I want to put more effort & attention to this one and making it a bit more current.

When was your last gig in France? Since French people are so patriotic, we all know you’ll be coming to the new Yoyo Club in Paris, France, sometime around the end of December. Last but not least, are you excited about this upcoming date?
I used to live in Paris 2 years ago, its one of my favorite cities in the world. I’m a big fan of Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Luc-Godard, and Brigitte Bardot and everytime I come to Paris and I have loads of friends and its just great. My last gig in France was at Rex Club around September and also the Marvelous Island Festival this summer – so excited to be back, I can’t take it anymore I’m about to lose control!
